Karen Wynne Mackay is an abstract artist. Her paintings are deeply manipulated surfaces, intertwined with coloured abstract markings, that emanate from her calligraphic influences. She uses fluid colourful layers, strong calligraphic marks made with handmade tools and various media, allowing the layers to conceal and then reveal until the composition is complete. It’s a process of discovery, pain and beauty.

Inspired by nature, music, and the places she’s called home—from Montreal and Hudson to Ottawa’s west end—her creative process is a dance of layering, revealing, and refining using handmade tools and mixed media.
Her art lives in collections across Canada and the U.S., and even in the Ontario Legislature. Karen’s also a proud member of Galerie Old Chelsea and shares her passion through workshops in abstract art and expressive mark making.
