Painters talk

Welcome to my blog/newsletter!

I am still in a quandary as to what the difference is newsletter/blog but hey it is a fun way of keeping in touch with you, my subscribers.

I have been asked countless times this question:

What do painters think when starting a painting?

I cannot speak for all painters but as soon as someone asks that question my mind starts: primary colours, secondary colours, tertiary colour, bold strokes, light airy strokes... values and small versus big. I start to visualize the marks that I make on the canvas with handmade tools, brushes, calligraphic tools, fingers and toes - did you read that correctly? Toes??? No not yet anyways:)

Starting a painting for me is the MOST FUN! It is also the most challenging.

After I make a start and it gets a bit messy and believe me it can get pretty darn messy around here! I start to make notes about where it can go from there and my reactions to certain parts of the painting that need to change direction... the music changes in rhythm or I put on a podcast- it really depends on the day which I choose. There are days where it is just me and the noise the tools make on the canvas or board.

Then I wander off into the unknown or the mystic or whatever you want to call it and I am in that place of creating and it is a special place to be, like that high runners get - boy I actually got that once it was amazing!

Then I am in that zone and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t but for now this painter is thinking only of the next stroke, layer, colour, tool, action or reaction to the one before.

So - in short that is my answer to the question:

“what do painters think” from my perspective only.

I would love to hear from you - what do you think when painting, writing, running, whatever...

Comment below let’s talk:)
